Passover is a unique holiday celebrated by the Jewish community. It commemorates the liberation by God from slavery in ancient Egypt, and the Jews’ freedom as a nation under the leadership of Moses. Passover occurs on the 15th of the Hebrew month of Nisan and lasts for 7 or 8 days depending on the tradition adhered to. According to the Book of Exodus in the Hebrew Bible, God helped the Israelites escape from slavery by inflicting ten plagues on the Egyptians. The Israelites were told to mark their doorposts with the blood of a slaughtered lamb, so that the spirit of the Lord would pass over their household and not afflict them with the plagues. Eventually, the Pharaoh relented and let the Israelites go.
